lighting up time

trees are toppled
tinsel tucked away
baubles buried
deep
in boxes
under our stairs.

lights, illuminated,
are eliminated
and extinguished as
electricity exhales,
happy to take a breather.

spiced orange scents
linger
to remind us
of mulled wine warmth
and midwinter mirth.

in a city of lights
plunged into darkness
we are now the candles:
high on a hill
all that is left
brief
but burning bright
staying lit
shining strong
flickering on.

  3. Greatly appreciate the warm tone, the happy feel. I also like the incidents of alliteration... illuminated, eliminated ... mulled wine, midwinter mirth... brief, burning bright. Lovely write.

  6. Liked the way you guide us from mirth to low light. Always a little sad to get back to earth.

  9. I took down all our decorations today and I liked the idea of electricity taking a breath! I can well picture the darkness of winter in the northern part of the world (thinking you are in the UK). The year we lived in the Netherlands I really wanted to keep those candles burning during these months. Even here I like candles in the evenings--Southern California.

    - There's a motto for 2013 if ever I heard one! This is by far one of the best christmas poems I've read this season/ever! Lovely imagery and really fills me with the christmas feeling I'm already missing.
