trees are toppled
tinsel tucked away baubles buried
deep
in boxes
under our stairs.
lights, illuminated,
are eliminated
and extinguished as
electricity exhales, happy to take a breather.
spiced orange scents
linger
to remind us
of mulled wine warmth
and midwinter mirth.
plunged into darkness
we are now the candles:
high on a hill
all that is left
brief
but burning brightstaying lit
shining strong
flickering on.

May the candle show us the path !!!
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
Deletelike that mulled wine smell...we are now the candles....what a cool line...we def need to bring the light...
ReplyDeleteA resolution for 2013.
DeleteGreatly appreciate the warm tone, the happy feel. I also like the incidents of alliteration... illuminated, eliminated ... mulled wine, midwinter mirth... brief, burning bright. Lovely write.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kim:-)
DeletePerfect for this time of year. I just took down our tree, so this really resonates.
ReplyDeleteAlways sad:-(
DeleteI love that last stanza....love 'we are now the candle high on the hill' and the idea of staying lit and shining strong!
ReplyDeleteSo nice to see you in Poetry Jam!
Thanks Mary. Nice to get the chance to share!
DeleteLiked the way you guide us from mirth to low light. Always a little sad to get back to earth.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. As if the magic's over.
DeleteKeep hold of Christmas.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely!
DeleteYou've captured the soul of January beautifully--hope and promises and the lingering scent of celebration. Love this one.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chantel.
Delete..'electricity exhales' ~~~ love those words, certainly true in the case of my home!!!
ReplyDeleteI know. The bill will be high!
DeleteI took down all our decorations today and I liked the idea of electricity taking a breath! I can well picture the darkness of winter in the northern part of the world (thinking you are in the UK). The year we lived in the Netherlands I really wanted to keep those candles burning during these months. Even here I like candles in the evenings--Southern California.
ReplyDeleteYes. Gets dark at four in the afternoon here in Scotland!
DeleteBeautifully delivered. Every stanza a jewel...my favorite has to be the 'spiced orange scents'...love the feeling this piece evokes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that. Much appreciated.
DeleteI really love the vivid imagery that you created in this poem. Great job sir.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThanks! Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, lovely imagery. I thought of starting anew and the ending of something great. Lovely
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Kiana. I appreciate your kind words!
ReplyDelete''shining strong

- There's a motto for 2013 if ever I heard one! This is by far one of the best christmas poems I've read this season/ever! Lovely imagery and really fills me with the christmas feeling I'm already missing.
I took down my decorations too ~ I have to say that last stanza is very beautiful and meaningful ~ Wishing you a peaceful new year ~
