...we scribble on: a therapy both thoughtful and wasteful:
put messages in our bottles to remind us of us later;
freely forwarding our voices onwards to a sad new world
simply sending out our lonely liners on a sea of words...
...they are bobbing out on waves from the beaches where we stand
they go rippling out in rhythms that detach from our hands
at the mercy of the oceans, letters plentiful as sand
drifting, swept away in storms, washed ashore in distant lands.
although
some may find the ocean's bed,
some
will become
a treasure chest,
cracked
open
to be sifted
by a child on a quest.

some will become a treasure...that is def encouraging...like the message in a bottle metaphor for our writing...we toss it out there not knowing where it will go...and hope someone will cherish it...nice write man...
ReplyDeleteYour question earlier on dverse inspired this Brian. It was bubbling up on the drive home and I had to write some of it whilst queuing in traffic. Thanks for the inspiration :)
DeleteThat first line is perfect...I so identify with all of this. I think you nailed what it is what we do as writers. I really like your close too...'a child on a quest'...wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jennifer. Your writing is received gratefully on these shores :)
DeleteWhat a lovely way to express and describe the muse ~ I like those messages in the bottle.. who know who will read it someday ~
ReplyDeleteNice to see you David ~

I enjoyed this poem so much, David! Indeed poetry can be both helpful and wasteful indeed; but sometimes we don't know which it is until much later! And indeed some of our poetry may end up on the 'ocean bed,' but others will be treasured for a long time to come.
ReplyDeleteWow! A sea of words. What an image. Very nicely done.
ReplyDeleteI like the long lines in the first two stanzas. A creative poem indeed.
ReplyDeleteputting messages in our bottles to remind us of us later...def. can relate to this..
ReplyDeletePerfect !!!
ReplyDeleteThe writers' mind perfectly disclosed.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a treasure!
ReplyDeleteHad to do that message in a bottle thing when I came out of hospital... head injury... amnesia... long story...
ReplyDeleteDavid, love how you shifted form on this, made me smile. And of course the ocean analogy one of my favorites, also enjoyed that message in a bottle :-) and what you said in the comments, words falling from the sky is very fun...
ReplyDeletewriting into the ocean feels real
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed this fully....
ReplyDeleteI really liked the stanza at the end... think it makes a good standalone poem:
